I made Stepping Out as a companion piece to Follow All Signs. After picking up a copy of Joel Meyerowitzs’s A Question of Color, I started thinking about binary decisions photographers face. Color or black and white? Candid or posed? Art or documentary? I found one of the choice’s most divisive amongst photographers was: Analog or Digital? Which is right for me? So, I bought a used Canon 90D. In addition to changing format, I decided to step out on other dogmatic approaches I had adopted. I embraced zoom lenses, auto focus, longer focal lengths, aperture and shutter priority, seeking out events, and unfamiliar lighting, compositions, and locations. Just like my first project, the title took on new meanings, and I had an answer to my questions: I don’t know, it just depends man.
