Follow All Signs is my first photographic series. After taking a photography elective while studying music, I fell in love with analog photography. Soon after buying a proper film camera (Nikon FM2) habitual record buying turned into collecting photo books. I gravitated towards 20th century black and white photographers like Koudelka, Jill Freedman, Sage Sohior, Cartier-Bresson, and of course Robert Frank. The title represented an effort to avoid committing to a series concept. I wanted to walk around, interoperate my visual world poetically, and discover what I was drawn to in the final edit. The name took on new meanings as negatives piled up, and a vague narrative thread occurred to me. When I started to feel compelled to take pictures “for the series” I felt confined by self imposed limitations, and knew the project was done. In the end, I still struggle to describe the subject matter in few words, but learned to trust the process and follow the feeling.
